Fire sprinkler system is an active fire protection measure, consisting of a water supply system, providing adequate pressure and flow rate to a water distribution piping system, onto which fire sprinklers are connected. Although historically only used in factories and large commercial buildings, systems for home and small building are now available at a cost-effective price. Fire sprinkler systems are extensively used worldwide, with over 40 million sprinkler heads fitted each year. In buildings completely protected by fire sprinkler systems, over 99% of fires were controlled by fire sprinklers alone

You have probably seen a number of movies where a small amount of smoke triggers all of the sprinklers in a building, soaking everyone and everything inside. But did you know that sprinklers aren’t even triggered by smoke, and they don’t all go off at once? Fire sprinkler systems are actually heat activated, one sprinkler head at a time, and most fires usually require only one or two sprinklers to be extinguished. These are just two of the many misconceptions about fire sprinkler systems. In this article, we’ll dispel other myths and learn the ins and outs of this important safety technology. You might think installing a fire sprinkler system is like choosing water damage over fire damage. This belief is a spin-off from the myths we just mentioned – that sprinklers are activated by smoke and every sprinkler head goes off at the same time. If that were the case, sprinkler systems could potentially cause more harm than good. After all, if you burned a piece of toast, every sprinkler would go off, soaking all of your belongings, even though there never was any real danger of fire. Fortunately, the clever engineers who developed these systems designed them to reduce the damage to your property from water, smoke, and fire. Fire sprinkler systems have been around for more than two centuries and have seen significant improvements over the years. It’s true that early versions weren’t very reliable and caused significant water damage. But today, sprinkler systems are credited with reducing deaths and loss of property by more than 65 percent [source: Fleming]. Since each sprinkler head is automatically triggered by fire-specific temperature, just one or two sprinklers can quickly extinguish and/or contain a fire to the room where it started and cause little property damage. And because sprinklers use about six times less water than a fire hose, they’re actually less harmful to your property than a visit from the fire department.
Types of Fire Sprinkler Systems

Because fire sprinkler systems protect a variety of buildings and property, many different types have been developed over the years. These include wet, dry, deluge, pre-action and foam. Each has its own unique set of characteristics that protect the specific building and property for which it was installed.

As we learned on the previous page, sprinkler heads are connected to a system of pipes in the walls or ceiling of a room. These pipes are composed of steel, copper or fire-resistant plastic. The most commonly used system in commercial buildings is a wet pipe system, which is composed of steel pipes that are always filled with water (hence, the term “wet”). The water in the pipes is under a moderate amount of pressure. When the sprinkler head is activated, the pressurized water in the pipes is immediately released, providing a faster reaction time than any other type of system.

High-Velocity Water Spray System is a specially designed system for oil fires with an entirely unique principle of fire extinguishment. It is employed to bring about a fundamental change in the nature of the inflammable liquid, which is temporarily converted into an emulsion which cannot burn.

All oils are water repellent and they cannot be wetted. Therefore, the cooling action of water applied in form of a jet is negligible. A low-pressure spray also has a minimal cooling effect on an oil fire.

High-Velocity Water Spray System is the only satisfactory method so far discovered for extinguishing an oil fire with water. A special nozzle, called projector is employed here to discharge a cone of water in the form of evenly distributed broken streams of high velocity and high momentum. The rapid movement of broken streams of water impacts the oil to break into tiny globules to form an emulsion with water which cannot burn.

High-Velocity Water Spray System has been installed extensively to protect paint and varnish processes, vegetable oil extraction plants, oil refineries and waterproofing factories. The greatest scope of application is in Electricity Generating Stations and Distribution Stations for the protection of oil-filled transformers switch-gear and the lubricating system of turbo alternators.

Medium Velocity Water Spray System is specially designed system for fires involving flammable liquids, liquefied gases, and certain solids semi-solids which cannot be extinguished by any form of water spray, or where it is not desirable to extinguish the fire completely. It works on the principle of controlling the rate of burning, preventing the dangerous increase of pressure in vessels exposed to fire, and protecting adjacent structures or buildings. These liquids have flash points below 32*C.

Medium Velocity Water Spray System is effective in protecting vessels and adjacent structures exposed to heat from an outbreak of fire. Sprayers direct water over the whole surface, preventing dangerous temperature rise which could result in an explosion. To ensure that the system operates with the minimum delay, the system is designed to be completely automatic.

Medium Velocity Water Spray System has a very wide range of application in control of flammable liquid fires like Acetone, Benzene, Butadiene, Butane, Carbon Disulphide, Cyclohexane, Ethyl alcohol, Ethylene oxide, Light naphtha, Methyl acetate, Petroleum spirits, Toluene, Xylene, Propane and more.

For fires involving oils with flash points above 65*C High-Velocity Water Spray System is recommended, as these fires can be very rapidly extinguished in almost all cases.
